Donna Lee by Joe Pass and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (NHOP). This is the same video from vicgroove, the audio track has been cleaned up and re-synchronized (though not perfect).
Niels STRATOSPHERIC, sorry Jaco but.....!!!
Joe came to our home to jam with my phenomenal jazz bassist father. On break, I asked Joe if I could play a few notes on his guitar. I shouldn't have; my hands were downright trembling. Interesting story about Joe's childhood.........his father, speaking figuratively, would whip the daylights out of Joe if he stopped practicing. NO social life, just Joe and his charts essentially 24/7. Herewith we see the product of all that sheddin'. And it was peculiar how Joe was so shy and quiet as it gets but his guitar scorches with authority :)
Complete masters. G.O.A.T
化け物過ぎる
I've always avoided the who's greatest guitar player question, really what does that mean but the more I hear Joe Pass I think we might have a candidate
Already at 17 Niels Henning was playing with visiting jazz greats in his hometown Copenhagen.
Mark amazed at your guy what a bassist 😢I miss you thanks man for giving me a place to be and play ❤️💖💥never forget you my brotha
I love Joe Pass but the guitar is a limited instrument and honestly playing at such a high tempo never sounds good to me. Masterful lines, masterful technique, but this like hearing a soprano try to sing bass.
I have never heard this idea before... how is the guitar limited in terms of its capacity to play at tempo? What would be a more ideal instrument? Sax? Keys? Is it due to the strings being pulled out of tune? Would this problem exist in any instrument with touched strings? I do notice some notes not being perfectly intonated but thats a problem with fretted instruments as well... there are true temperament guitars tho but i guess there is a subjective quality to it as well, like i imagine john scofields sound is based on his ability to pull some of the notes out of perfect intonation on purpose 😊
@@gypsyfromthesatelliteoflov5425 I don't know what to tell you man, it's like someone saying "I've never noticed the lute has less of a dynamic range than a cello". You can, for instance, compare heavy metal shredders that practice all their life just to achieve top speeds on the guitar. The max tempo they play it is just the regular high speed tempo of bebop that, e.g., John Coltrane could easily blaze through. Guitar is just not as fast. And I am saying it as a jazz guitarist lol.
@@crapadopalese would this apply to players like roy marchbank or allan holdsworth or shawn lane or more recently josh meader? Maybe its a technique thing? Hmmm im trying to wrap my head around it. Like i listen to.michael brecker and coltrane and i do hear slurred notes when they blaze thru a passage but i guess it has a different quality to guitar Also is the dynamic range the issue or was that just an illustration of a difference that was more pronounced
This to virtous artist will never be forgotten……God Bless them..
Truly awesome.
Démentiel ! 🎶 😳
I worked on this tune for months try to get it up to Charlie Parker’s tempo but never quite got there. Joe is on a whole different level.
I’m surprised two virtuosos found this necessary.
This is only surpassed when you add Oscar Peterson
Amazing how Joe keeps up with Niels. No, wait, amazing how Niels keeps up with Joe. No, s***, wait, amazing how Joe keeps up with Joe. No, wait, amazing how Niels keep up with Niels, No, wait...
Fabuleux !!!
There is musicianship and then there is this ...what can you say....wow....
Too many notes. So take out a few…and it’ll be perfect.
Which few did you have in mind, your majesty? But seriously that film is fiction, entertaining fiction, but fiction nonetheless... salieri and mozart were more or less collegues... but that scene with the emperor was great fun
Niels turned the upright bass into somethoing else!
A lot of joy! Thanks.🪐
amazing !!
That took some practice...
I'm a lover of music, but.... Is this supposed to be a parody of its self? There's so much going on it just becomes meaningless. I challenge anybody to whistle the melody of this piece of "music". It's just two wankers wanking as hard and fast as they can possibly wank. I'm not worshiping at this alter, thank you very much.
It defo has meaning but it might not be for you. If i had to describe it, its really hot curry, with so much chilly itd probably burn your eyebrows off. It defo is not for everyone, but to those who love chilly or curry, this is a delicacy. Music can be fast and complex and still be music, like in a lot of traditional asian and african music, the tempos are blazing and the notes may be a bit more vague relative to western stuff but its still music :)
@@gypsyfromthesatelliteoflov5425 I dunno... I think I can pretty much do the same thing by humming a scale and quickly flicking my finger over my lips.
@@bhanson4917 that would be valid... and if you manage to connect with someone musically by doing that, you have successfully created music. Some music probably actually does that Joe pass defo connected with people, same way liszt did, same way paganini did... they all came out with ways to play their instruments as if they were flicking their tongue while humming a scale, or an arpeggio, or a chord. Its just that people wont connect with everything, and thats fine
@@gypsyfromthesatelliteoflov5425 I will agree on basis that the difference between the sound of "music" and "noise" is that music is a specifically decided sequence of notes and sounds in a specifically decided and intentional pattern over time. I'll will give it that.
le debut est mal monté donc c de la merde la video
God blessed 👽
At first I thought this was a deep fake video. But, nope. God exists, his name is NHOP.
🌱❤️🌷🙄
(Sits and stares at my monitor in utter disbelief. Occasionally letting loose verbal expressions of astonishment)
Okay wait! MY GOD WAS HE GREAT!
wau
🌱💚💮🙄
By the end of this video, I was sweating profusely!
This was recorded in 1979, three years after the "Jaco Pastorious" album (1976) with the opening track of Donna Lee. NHOP had no doubt heard Jaco play this. And no doubt Jaco had heard NHOP play on many recordings or live because he was everywhere in the 60's and 70's Playing with Rollins, Gordon, Peterson, Evans and many more.
I think NHOP would have been much bigger if he had toured in the states - unfortunately he absolutely hated flying so even when OP performed here he had to find an alternate bass player.
This version makes Jaco's version seem stately in pace.
The great Dane with the very long name and Joe nails it ,of course.
Like everyone- I’m blown away by this. Just two god level virtuosos having the time of their lives. In spite of the speed this part I absolutely love is Joe’s ultra minimalist comping during NHOPs solo and the way they rebuild to return to unison. Incredible
The first line of Joe’s second chorus is just ridiculous. An atomic clock couldn’t be more in time.
Monster's
if any of yall want to know how to play it on upright this fast then here lol. ua-cam.com/video/HErXB21feM4/v-deo.html
I just learned this at 190...what tempo is this 2000?
This is terrifying
scary..very......scary 😬😁
What a performance by two jazz giants. Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen was the Jaco Pastorius of the acoustic bass, the things he could do on the instrument are beyond belief. RIP Joe and Niels, you will never be forgotten
Just discovered this gem 💎, and I’m blown away. My guy on the bass, I got carpal tunnel just watching him, holy smokes!
Joe playing his d'aquisto - not too many videos of this guitar WOW
I was fortunate enough to see Niels play live with Oscar Peterson at the Hollywood Bowl. The only unfortunate thing was that Niels was up in age and not in his prime. He was still amazing though and I enjoyed hearing him play. He's definitely my favorite upright bass player. Also, in the audience that night was Ron Carter, another great bass player. I saw him stand up after the show and was tempted to go up to him to introduce myself, but I figured that he's probably a very private sort of person off stage and wouldn't want to be bothered. And the way that he was dressed in a tux means that he was probably going to an after party for the trio.
they really didn’t have to rip this hard but im so glad they did
Upright bass. WoW
WOW!!
Etiquette and curriculums
What is the guitar ? Is it a D'aquisto?
Incredible on both guitar and bass. Virtuosi both. Great chops and swinging lines. Wow! Thanks to Jerome for giving us all this. Other wordly! Gotta practice!
